To Rodney Jr.

Where did you find: 1750-1760 David Jay--Tioga County, PA Tioga, NY (brother of Joshua)
1764 Joshua Jay (from NJ. A descendant of Thomas Jay) (bro. Of David)
Before 1765 John Jay
If Jay's were in Tioga County this early, there is probably no need to look at the Gee's. Broome and Tioga are right on the southern border with Pennsylvania, and Tioga county Pennsylvania looks like it is right next to them. I think I need to look at Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. It would be much easier to go from Tioga Penn. to Tioga NY that from Mass, or even NY city. Could J. Hyrum Jay's first name be Joshua, named after his grandfather or great uncle? Isn't the oldest son most likely of the male children to be named after the grandfather. Peter Jay's children are J. Hyrum, Silas, David, Joseph, and John. The names David, John, and possibly Joshua all end up as names for Peter's children. I think you've made a breakthough here. I think this relationship is much more likely than anything else I have been looking at. Also that would tie us in with Thomas, and this line would go way back. Good work.

Love, Dad

Index of Deeds

I also found an entire page of transactions in a microfilmed Index of Deeds book, but I forgot to note the microfilm number. I was in a hurry. All the Jays on the page are Peter Augustus Jay, John Jay, William Jay, Peter Jay and one David Jay. the transactions run from 1806 to 1843. Fortunately I did photo copy the page.

History of the Town of Chenango, Broome County

CHAPTER XXX

TOWNS OF BROOME COUNTY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C H E N A N G O

We have good authority for believing that the first settler in the township of Chenango was Thomas Gallup, who moved into the territory in 1787. He did not stay long, however. In the same year Col. William Rose, accompanied by his brother, established himself on the site of Nimmonsburg, acquiring title to land from the Indians then inhabiting that section.

Being a well favored country, with rich soil and pleasant surroundings, the valley soon began to fill up with a sturdy company of settlers, not a few of whom had been patriots of the Revolution. We shall tarry to name a few of these pioneers: William Hall, Jedediah Seward, John Newell, Jared Page, Stephen and Henry Palmer, Foster Lilly, James Temple, Nathaniel Bishop, Henry French, Nathaniel Lee, and Tyrus Page. Henry French in 1788 built a sawmill at Castle Creek and carried it on for some time. This was one of the first industries of the township.

Chenango township was one of the original towns of the county of Tioga. How extensive its lines then were, may be seen from the fact that it embraced all the territory now belonging to the townships of Windsor, Colesville, Sanford, Conklin, Fenton, Binghamtom and Dickinson. One after another these townships were cut off from Chenango, in the order named above, leaving the township robbed of its original territory; but in 1808 a section of Union was annexed to it, and in 1856 a large portion of Maine was added to it. As then constituted, Chenango had an acreage of 21,099. It is a fact of interest that the first settlers in Chenango had been settlers in Union, while those who came subsequent to 1808 with the exception of those which came in from Maine, were pioneers of Chenango. February 16th, 1791, the township of Chenango was established, and in April following the first town meeting was held. Because of loss of the original records it is impossible to give the names of the officers chosen at that time.

The fluctuations in population which have attended the progress of the township of Chenango are of historical interest, as showing the destiny of a town situated near to a growing city, without manufacturing resources, but exclusively engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1790 Chenango numbered 45 inhabitants. Ten years later its population had increased to 1,149; in 1810, 1,360; in 1820, 2,626; in 1830, 3,716; in 1840, 5,475; in 1850, 8,734; in 1860, 1,841; in 1870, 1,680; in 1880, 1,590; in 1890, 1,448; in 1900, 1,372; in 1910, 1,237, in 1920, 1,183.

Chenango provided educational facilities for its children at a very early date, as we conclude from the fact that in 1807 the township contained eighteen school districts. Mason Whiting and Oliver Ely were at that time school commissioners. In 1838 the number of children of school age was 1,372. Twenty years later the number of districts had been reduced to twelve, in which there were only 470 boys and girls of school age.

Chenango has a number of villages and hamlets to which we ought to give passing attention. Prominent among these is Castle Creek, located in the northwestern part of the township. It is probable that Josiah West was the pioneer settler here, he having migrated to this section prior to the beginning of the eighteenth century. The first mill here was built by Ira Keeler, and the first store by William West. A post office was established here through the instrumentality of Josiah West, and has been maintained since. The religious interests of the village have been and still are cared for by a Baptist and a Methodist church. A good common school is also supported at Castle Creek.

Glen Castle, Kattellville, Chenango Bridge and West Chenango are other smaller villages in Chenango township, and part of the village of Chenango Forks likewise lies in this township.

We find a number still living in the township of Chenango who trace their ancestry to pioneers of the Chenango valley. Among these are the Aldermans, the Dunhams, the Kattells, of Kattellville, the Norths and the Booths. In regard to the name last mentioned, we note that Hawley S. Booth is a direct descendant of one of the oldest families in the town of Chenango, and his mother one of the oldest surviving members of the family. Mrs. Booth, wife of Hawley Booth, says, "Grandfather Stone was one of the first if not the first settler in the town, and George Munsell and James Munsell were descendants of this grandfather Stone. They were my husband’s uncles." Mrs. Booth is now town clerk of Chenango, residing at Chenango Bridge.

At the present time the value of the real property of Chenango is $935,320, and the value of the franchises $102,548. The following are the present officers of the township: Supervisor, George F. Briggs; town clerk, Mrs. Lula M. Booth; assessors, Harry Mix, Henry M. Fuller, Anthony North; superintendent of highways, Ervin F. Swift; justices of the peace, Hawley S. Booth; Louisa Ross, Harry Peters; collector, William Minor; superintendent of the poor, Elmer Brotzman; constables, Harry C. Mix, Weldon Dowd, William Minor, Ralph Clark.

Thomas Gee died 1796

If Thomas Gee was husband of Sarah Jay and father of Peter, then his death in 1796 would have left Sarah a widow by the 1800 census. Also mentions a land grant. Maybe in Broome County??

Sarah Gee

Children of WILLIAM GEE and CATHERINE DE ROSSELLE are:
8. i. PVT. JOSEPH GEE, b. Bet. 1731 - 1732
9. ii. PVT. CORNELIUS GEE, b. Abt. 1735
10. iii. DEROSEL GEE, b. 1737
11. iv. 1ST MAJOR WILLIAM GEE, b. 1740
v. SARAH GEE, [perhaps a daughter] b. Abt. 1742; d. Orange, New York. York.

Notes for SARAH GEE:

Sarah Gee, aka "Sally" was a Revolutionary War patriot and at least six of her brothers were veterans of the war. Several histories relate the incident in which "Aunt Sally" Gee had 1/2 pound of tea, which was forbidden during the Revolutionary War. When Fort Montgomery was set afire announcing a British victory, Sally resolved to have her final cup of tea before abandoning her home. Being determined not to let the tea fall into the hands of the Redcoats she grabbed an old teapot and hastily dumped in all of the tea; the tea turned out so strong she couldn't drink it. The following poem was found among manuscripts at the Putnam County Historical Society, Cold Springs, New York.

Aunt Sally Gee

"Aunt Sally Gee had half a pound of tea
On the day the British stormed Fort Montgomery.

The beacon's fires flare, created such a scare
The women were aware they must at once prepare.

In case I have to flee my house, said Sally Gee,
I will not leave my tea to be drunk by the enemy!'

So in her pewter pot she quickly dumped the lot
Filled up with water hot and down in the chair she sot.

So bitter was the brew, was nothing she could do
But throw the stinking brew out where the daisies grew.

Good folks should be warned by the tale of Sally Gee,
To measure out the tea and keep from gluttony."

The History of Orange County NY Philadelphia 1881 relates a story of "Aunt Sally" who didn't want the hated redcoats to have her tea.

There is no direct evidence of the existence of any daughters of William Gee. However, the historical anecdote mentions "Aunt Sally Gee" living in Orange Co., NY during the Revolutionary War and was within sight of the burning of Fort Montgomery by the British in 1777. It is supposed that this "Aunt Sally" was an unmarried daughter of William Gee and was living with or near her two brother's Cornelius and John, she, also could have been a daughter-in-law by an unknown son.

Confused

Our Peter Jay disapeared from the Census records between 1840 and 1850. I found that his will, at least I think it is his will was entred into the county records on Mar 06 1843. However I have also found that Peter Augutus Jay (the son of John Jay)died in February of 1843. Maybe it is his will that was recorded. Or maybe it is just a coincident.

Early Broome County Newspapers

Early Broome County Newspapers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

French's gazeetter, pages 179-80, contains information on the early newspapers of Broome County, including the 6 in operation at the time of publication (1860).

I have reproduced the data here, keeping the same conventions that French used. Names of newspapers in italics indicate that they were discontinued by the time French published; bold type indicates papers still being published in 1860. In addition, I have underlined the name of the papers to make them a little easier to read. Name changes are listed under the parent newspaper.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The American Constellation was published in 1800, when Broome county was still part of Tioga County. The paper was headquartered in Union Village.
The Broome Co. Patriot started in Binghamton in 1812 by Chauncey Morgan. In 1815, the publishers changed to Morgan and Robinson and the name was changed to the The Phoenix. By 1819, the newspaper ceased publication.
The Republican Herald started in 1818 and continued until 1823. There were several different publishers: Morgan and Howard, Abraham Burrell and Dorephus Abbey.
The Broome Republican was started in 1822 in Binghamton. It was published by Major Augustus Morgan until 1824. Over the intervening decades, there were several different publishers: Morgan and Canoll until 1828, Evans & Canoll until 1835 and then Canoll and Cooke until 1839. In 1839, T. Cooke took over as publisher and continued to do so until 1848 and he pasted it on to E.R. Colston who published until 1849. The newspaper then became the property of William Stuart and as of 1860, it had both daily and weekly editions. For a while, The Evening Express, a daily published in 1848, was a second paper under the The Broome Republican banner. The Broome Republican also absorbed The Susquehanna Journal in 1855. It had been started in October of 1853 by W. H. Pearne. **** 83 vital records from "scattered issues" of this paper were included "10,000 Vital Records of Central New York". The time frame - 1842-45.
The Binghamton Daily Republican started out as The Iris, a semi-monthly paper started in 1839 by C.P. Cooke. In July of 1841, the paper was bought by Edwin T. Evans. He enlarged operations, changing the paper to a weekly, and in 1849, added a daily version The Daily Iris . Both the daily and weekly eventually changed their name to the above, and as of 1860, was still published by William Stuart, who also owns The Broome Republican above.
The Binghamton Democrat began publication with the name of The Broome County Courier. J.R. Orton was the first publisher and the paper continued as such until 1837. French's reports several different publishers for the paper after that time: Sheldon & Marble; E.C. Sheldon; E.P. Marble; E.P. Marble and J.W. Marble; and Marble and Johnson. In 1843, J.C. Orton took over the paper and changed the name to:
The Binghamton Courier and Broome County Democrat. In 1846, J.K. Dickinson took over and changed the name to the its "1860" name. As of 1860, it was published by Adams and Lawyer.
The Binghamton Standard was started in Nov 1853 by J. Van Valkenburg. It was still in operation in 1860.
The Binghamton Mercury was a semi-monthly paper published for a short time by Chester Dehart. No dates known at this time.
The Broome County American was started by Ransom Bostwick in May 1855. No ending date known at this time.
The Union News began publication in Union in 1851. Its first publisher was A.F. Quinlan, who sold out to Cephas Benedict and Ebenezer M. Betts. As of 1860, it was still in operation.
The Broome County Gazette was started G.A. Dodge in July 1858 at Whitneys Point. As of 1860, it was still in operation.

Broome County Will Book Testator Surname list C

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Gordon H. Woodward was very active in the NYSDAC, serving as State Chairman at one point. As part of her service, she abstracted the probate records that appeared in the will book C of the county.

Below is a listing of the surnames of people whose wills were abstracted into that record.

Complete versions of these records are now part of the Woodward compilation database. Please follow the link just above the listing to access the database, which includes much more information on early Broome County families.

GEEnealogy

I found this at http://www2.arkansas.net/~mgee/genealo.html It is under the tittle the GEEnealogy. You might want to skip down to the highlighted part.

The name "Gee" appears to have originated with the Normans in England. A possible link to the pronunciation of the Norman surname Gui or Guy is expressed in the book The Norman People and Their Descendants. A small village in the English parish of Stockport, Cheshire - Gee Cross - appears to have taken it's name from the Gee family. There are possibly as many as three villages in France named Gee. One of these is in the Loire Valley area.

According to the book The Gee Family, copyright 1937 by W. J. Fletcher, the Gee surname cannot be directly traced beyond the 17th century, however the Gee name was prevalent, according to Fletcher, in Leicestershire from 1400, Nottinghamshire from 1460, and Lincolnshire from about 1340. I have seen unsubstantiated references to a southern Scottish origin of the Gee surname and links to such spellings as MacGee, MacGhie, MacGhee, and Magee derived from the Strathclyde Britons.

This ancient founding race of the north was a mixture of Gaelic/Celts whose original territories ranged from Lancashire, England in the south, northward to the south bank of the river Clyde in Scotland, but if this information is accurate it is almost certainly a group unrelated or at least far distant from my own ancestry.
In the 1700's Americans in New England continued to be heavily influenced by their British origins. There was a tendency to pronounce an "e" as though it was an "a". As a result the name Gee was often pronounced Jay. Since spelling at this time was not "fixed" and often a matter of personal preference the name Gee was often written, as it sounded in some dialects, "Jay". The family is definitely English and the spelling Gee is well documented in England as far back as the 1300's.

Chenango

Hi, again,

I copied this from rootsweb.com according to the entry below on Chenango, Windsor, Conklin, Binghamptom and Port Crane were all part of the City of Chenango at one time. Also Kattleville is a small hamlet here. When reading in the Gee -- Jay book I found a note about a Gee being buried in the Kattleville Cemetary. Gee, maybe we are Gees. I should have looked at that Gee -- Jay book more closely.

Rod

CHENANGO–was formed Feb. 16, 1791. Windsor was taken off in 1807, Conklin in 1824, and Binghamton and Port Crane in 1855. A part of Union was annexed Feb. 26, 1808, and a part of Maine, Nov. 27, 1856. It lies upon the W. bank of Chenango River, a little W. of the center of the co. Its surface consists of the river intervale and several high ridges extending in a N. and S. direction and separated by the narrow valleys of small streams. The declivities of the hills are steep, and their summits are 300 to 600 feet above the valleys. Castle and Kattel Creeks, tributaries of Chenango River, are the principal streams. The former was named from the location of an Indian castle near its mouth, and the latter from a family of early settlers. The soil upon the N. hills is a gravelly loam mixed with disintegrated slate and underlaid by hardpan, but farther S. it becomes a deeper and richer gravelly loam. It is productive, but, from its moist character, it is largely devoted to grazing. Stock growing and dairying form the leading branches of agricultural interest. Castle Creek (p. v.) is on the creek of the same name, in the W. part of the town. Pop. 185. Glen Castle, (p. o.,) on a branch of the same stream, is in the central part. Chenango, (p. o.,) on Chenango River, is a station on the S. B. & N. Y. R. R. Kattelville is a hamlet on Kattel Creek. The first settlement was made in 1787, by Thos. Gallop. CH1 There are 4 churches in town. CH2

New York Counties

Here are the counties in New York. Broome is colored blue in this map, and is on the bottom on the border with Pennsylvania. Peter Jay lived in Broome and perhaps Chenango. Or maybe there is also a city called Chenango in Broome. Sarah Jay lived in tioga in 1880, but at that time Tioga included Broome and at least part of Chenango.

Peter Jay

25 October 2005

Hi Everyone, Peter and I went up to the Family History Library today to do some reasearch. Most things didn't pan out. I came up with a few things of interest that I will include in this blog. First of all let me tell you where things begin to fall apart. Our ancestor Henry Andrew Jay was born on the 18th of May 1831 in Broome County New York. His dad is J. Hiram Jay who lived in Broome County New York and was born about 1807. His Father is Peter Jay who was born about 1781 and is Of, Chenango, Broome, New York. I have no idea where Peter came from, before ending un in Broome County, or who his parents are. But here are a few things I found out today.
Montgomery County in New York was created in 1772. It was originally named Tryon, but was renamed in 1774 to Montgomery.
Tioga county was created in 1791 and was created out of Montgomery County.
Broome County was created in 1806 out of Tioga County.
Chenango, another County in New York was created in 1798 from Herkimer and Tioga Counties.
So it is possible to have lived in Tryon County, Montgomery County, Tioga County and Broome or Chenango County without ever having moved.
So it makes it hard to research Broome County when it was once Tioga, Montgomery and Tryon.

One person of interest I found today is Sarah Jay in the 1800 Census living in Tioga County. Six years before Broome County was created. It may be in the part of Tioga that became Broome. Sarah is between the ages of 26 and 46. She is listed as the head of the house, and has a male child between the ages of 10 and 16 living with her. She also has a female child under the age of 10 living with her. In 1800 Peter Jay would be about 18 or 19. Could this be his mom? Is she a widow? Where did she come from? For her to be here at this time I would think she must be related to Peter. With a child under the age of ten her husband was probably alive in the 1790 census. I'll have to look at that closer.

Also I found a Bartholomeus Jay who is married to Jannetien Post who had a child Maria baptized on 19 April 1768 in the Katbaan Church, in New York. Where did he come from? I never heard of a Bartholomeus Jay before, and did he have any sons?

There is no record of Frederick Jay (brother of Justice John Jay) having any children, but the 1790 census shows him having a male child under the age of sixteen living with him, and two white females no age listed. Does he really have children?

According to the newpaper "Republican Herald" Peter Jay had a letter at the Chenango Point Post Office on 18 Dec. 1821. Getting a letter was big news back in those days.

Some Jays changed the spelling of their names to Joy, and some Gees living in New York at this time changed the spelling of their name to Jay or Gay. Gee, it would be gay and no joy, if we were anything but Jays.

The books "The Jay -- Joy family of Norfolk" and "The history of the Gee, Jay Family : New York to Kansas, weren't any help. Our missing Jay anscestors just didn't make it into the books.

So my trip to get some answers left me with a lot more questions and one enticing lead with Sarah Jay. But who is Sarah's husband and where did he come from! And is she Peter's Mom?

Love, Rod
