John Gee buried in Chenango and Kattelville

Chenango, one of the original towns of Broome, established February 16, 1791, is the mother of seven of the towns of the county. Colonel William Rose, on the site of Nimmonsburg, was the first of the permanent settlers, 1787. Agriculture has always been the dominant occupation of the section. Among the numerous pleasant hamlets are: Castle Creek, Glen Castle, Kattelville, Chenango Bridge and West Chenango.

The Cemetary in kattelville and Chenango are probably the same.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/guy.htm
GUY CEMETERY
Located in the Town of Afton, Chenango County, New York on the east side of the main road (Route 7) between the village of Afton and the village of Nineveh in Broome County on the west side of the Susquehanna River.
Markers copied March 1990 by J. Kelsey Jones.

This a very old burial ground with many plain markers of native stone bearing no inscriptions. There would appear to be about thirty five native field stones placed as markers. The oldest dated marker bears the date of 1798 for Abigail Bridgman.

There are four rows of markers. Row one begins on the south edge of the cemetery and the markers are copied from west (road side) to east. Anything in parenthesis is added information by the compiler for clarification. Single spacing of type indicates names appearing on one marker or monument. Several footmarkers have been removed from their original location and placed in the same row as the headstones which they belong to. Spellings are as they appear.

Anything in brackets [ ] is added information by Internet poster for clarification.

David jay

David Jay, an early settler at Osceola, was a Revolutionary soldier. But little is known concerning him. His remains lie buried in the Osceola Cemetery.

David jay/gee in dutchess County

There were two patents in Dutchess County with similar names:

The Great (or Lower) Nine Partners Patent of 1697
The Little (or Upper) Nine Partners Patent of 1706
Although they were adjacent to each other (in the northeastern quadrant of the county, see the map), they were quite distinct, having different "partners".

We are associated with the latter (Little Nine Partners Patent), and cannot help with queries for information regarding the other Dutchess County patents. To assist those of you who are interested in the Great Nine Partners Patent, we have compiled a page of information relevant to that patent and other related areas of inquiry (see below).

David Jay war pension

From the Revolutionary War Pension File of DAVID GEE

January 3, 1917

Mr. Frank E. RAPP
PO Box 91
Brooklyn, NY

Sir: In reply to your letter of the 15" ultimo, you are advised that from the
papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W. 3241, it appears that DAVID
GEE or JAY enlisted in the spring of 1777, served as Private under Captain Titus
and Col. Henry B. Livingston and under Capt. John Francis Hamtramek and Col.
Cortland of the New York Line. He was in the battle and capture of Burgoyne, in
Gen. Sullivan's Indian Expedition, at the surrender of Cornwallis and was
discharged in 1783.

He was allowed pension on his application excepted April 10, 1818, at which time
be was 66 years old and a resident of Tioga County, Pa. He died March 6 or 7,
1833, at Farmington Township in said county.

He married at Nine Partners, N.Y. in the fall of 1787 or 1788, MARY RYDER or
RIDER, who was also called Molly and Polly and the name GEE which was Welch was
pronounced JAY in English and spelled that way by his son JESSE R.

His widow applied for pension August 15, 1843 at which time she was 83 years old
and a resident of Middlebury township, Tioga County, Pa. and she stated that she
had six children, namely; Catharine, Robert, Susanna, Sally, Charity
[underlined], and Jesse R., all of whom were alive except Susanna. She died in
Middlebury Township, Nov. 14, 1843 and the pension due her was allowed to the
surviving children in 1857, Jesse R. of Elkland, Tioga County, Pa., Catharine
JAY of Middlebury, Pa., Sally wife of William MOSS or MORSE of Middlebury, Pa.
Charlotte (underlined) wife of A. O. TAYLOR of Elmira, N.Y.

Very respectfully

Commissioner.

Peter Gee

A Peter Gee appears in Massachusetts records in the year 1653. This Peter Gee and his wife Grace had sons Thomas, John, and Joshua. Joshua's son, Rev. Joshua Gee, was a colleague of Cotton Mather at the Old North Church in Boston. Rev. Gee succeeded Mather as pastor of the Old North Church and preached at Mather's funeral.

Peter Gee was christened on January 25, 1614 in Newton Ferrers, Devon, England. He was the son of a John Gee. Peter came to America and he was the master of a fishing vessel that sailed out of the Isle of Shoals off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was on the Isle of Shoals at least by 1653 and left to settle in Boston by 1673. The whereabouts of Peter's son Thomas was unknown by 1673 but the other two sons, John and Joshua, were respectable citizens of Boston and prosperous in the ship building trade. There is an interesting reference in a deed from Peter to one of these two sons relinquishing a life annuity in a piece of property in consideration for that son's efforts in paying a ransom to secure the release of the other son from slavery in Algiers to which he had been sold by pirates. Both of these brothers can be traced forward for several generations.

Thomas Gee was christened on March 2, 1643. There are numerous references to Thomas Gee as a possible ancestor of the Gee family in Virginia. Specifically he is possibly the father of Charles and Henry Gee. There are references to a "tradition" in the Gee family of Virginia that Charles and Henry were the sons of a Thomas Gee of Boston, Mass. In an article about Pattie Williams Gee contained in The North Carolina Booklet of the NC Society Daughters of the American Revolution (Vol VII, No. 1 July, 1907), Pattie stated that she is a great-great granddaughter of Charles Gee of Virgina who was a descendant of Thomas Gee of Boston, Massachusetts. W. J. Fletcher, in an article that appeared in an Atlanta newspaper, June 1, 1930 made reference to the tradition that the Virginia family was descended from Thomas Gee of Boston. For reasons unknown Mr. Fletcher chose to leave this reference out of his book on the Gee family. None of the references to Thomas Gee as the ancestor of the Virginia family have been substantiated insofar as I know.

Joshua Jay in Dryden

Joshua Jay in Dryden, New York

The first date of Etna which we can give with any accuracy or certainty is that of the organization of the first religious society in the township, the first and we believe to this day, the only regular Baptist church of Dryden, which was organized February 29, 1804, at the home of William Miller. The meeting was opened with singing and prayer by Mr. Miller, Samuel Hemmingway being elected deacon, and John Wickham the clerk of the society. Among the original members are said to have been Francis Miller, Elijah Dimmick, Silas Brown, Ebenezer Brown, Nathaniel Luther, Job Carr, Ziba Randall, Timothy Owens, Jonathan Dunham, Joshua Jay, Abraham Woodcock, Nathan Dunham, Joel Whipple, Samuel Skillinger, Morris Bailey, Orpha Luther, Asher Wickham, Mehitable Carr, Betsey Brown, Abigail Dimmick, Mary Owens, Lucy Dunham and Katie Woodcock.
