first quakers of New York

Ship and Passenger Information:

The Woodhouse was a small coastal trading ship, nearly unserviceable,
and too small for long ocean crossings. It was owned by Robert Fowler of
Bridlington, England, a ministering Quaker. He offered it to a Quaker group
unable to depart England due to the high fines on Captains who transported
Quakers on their vessels. He and the group arrived, after a perilous journey,
at "Nieuw Amsterdam" on August 1, 1657.
These were, then, the first Quakers of "New York".

John Gee/Jay

Hi, I just wanted to update you on my latest research. The John Jay or Gee who lived in Chenango and died in Chenango where Peter lived is PVT. John Gee who was born in 1745 - 1746, not John Gee/Jay who was born in 1756. I found the elder John Gee's application for a pension. The interesting thing is that in the application the name was John Jay and then someone changed the spelling of Jay by writing over it with a Gee. In David's (b. 1752) Pennsylvania application for a pension his son Jesse explained that Gee was a Welch name and that Jay was the American way to spell the name. So it wasn't John Jay (1756) married to Elizabeth Bush who lived in Chenango, but the John Jay 1745/46 married to Mary Harrison. However, we still have a John Gee buried in Kattelville which is part of Chenango, Broome county, and a John Gee buried in Plattekill, Ulster county.

Love, Dad
